In response to the NSFW ban being enacted by Tumblr Staff, on December 17th 2018 I propose that we all log off of our Tumblr accounts for 24 hours.

The lack of respect and communication between staff and users is stark. Users have been begging staff to delete the porn bot outbreak, which has plagued the website for well over a year. The porn bots oftentimes send people asks and messages, trying to get them to go to a website full of viruses. They also spam advertisements on others posts.

Users have also begged that Tumblr ban neo-nazis, child porn, and pedophiles, all which run rampant on the site. The site/app got so bad that it was taken off the app store.

However, instead of answering the users, Tumblr has instead taken the liberty to ban all NSFW content, regardless of age. But users have already run into issues of their SFW content being marked as sensitive and being flagged as NSFW, not allowing them to share their work.

Not only does this discriminate again content creators, but it also discriminates against sex workers. Disgustingly, the ban will be enacted on December 17 which is also International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

This ban is disgusting, and while I (and plenty of others) welcome porn bots and child porn being banned, the Tumblr filtration system is broken. It tags artistic work’s nipples as NSFW (when it is art), it tags SFW art as NSFW (when it is not), and does not stop the porn bots, neo-nazis and dozens of other issues.

This ban is discriminatory. This ban is ineffective. This ban is unacceptable.

To protest, log off of your Tumblr account for the entirety of December 17th. Log off at 12 am EST or 9PM PST and stay off for 24 hours. Don’t post. Don’t log on. Don’t even visit the website. Don’t give them that sweet ad revenue.

Tumblr’s stock has already taken a hard hit. Let’s make it tank. Maybe then they will listen to the users.

Reblog to signal boost! We must force change.

Some people really need to step back and realize what really started the LGBT community. Why we specifically came together in our activism.

It wasn’t a bunch of people saying “oh wow we’re weird together” but a group of people coming together who faced similar circumstances of homophobia+transphobia. People who were being murdered by their government. People being put on the streets, losing their jobs, and losing their lives.

Watering down our history of it was a bunch of weirdos who wanted to be weird together ignores everything we’ve been through making us have to group together. Ignores the whole generation of voices lost in the AIDS crises. To murder. To police raids. To being thrown out of their homes. These acts are what made us come together out of survival. Not because we wanted to join a club.

It’s that time of year to say no to the Salvation Army.

Never forget they let a Trans woman die instead of helping her.

Never forget they have tossed entire families on the street for having an LGBT child.

Never forget they tell non Christian families that unless they convert they will not help them.

Never forget that the Salvation Army is bigoted and hateful, many of the bell ringers routinely heckle and harass LGBT couples.

Annual reblog.

listen i know a lot of you think that judaism is just like….christianity but with some cool more ~ethnique~ holidays or whatever but if you’re approaching your interpretation of judaism within any sort of framework related to xtianity you’re doing it entirely wrong

“the torah says [x]” doesn’t mean “the torah says this and so this is what everyone does bc that’s the torah”

“the torah says [x]” means “for the next several thousand years people are going to argue about what exactly this means, what the loopholes are, how many different ways this can be interpreted, whether we should even follow it, and hey maybe gd isn’t even real so maybe the question is how this impacts us and our society, what are the implications, etc”

judaism is not “the torah says sodomy is an abhorrence therefore the entire religion is intrinsically homophobic and gd hates gays and is gonna send us to hell for being gay” because that is not how judaism works AT ALL

if you’re a prospective convert, if you’re someone who’s interested in theology, if you’re someone who thinks you know enough about judaism to talk about it on the internet, it is ESSENTIAL to understand these things.

judaism is not, and has never been, xtianity. not just because of our holidays. not just because we don’t believe that jesus is the messiah. but because we have a fundamentally different philosophy about gd, the torah, and how we should live our lives.

this is ok to rb btw

Many people who live in the southern region of Vancouver Island may have heard of the Victoria Lesbian Seniors Care Society, an organization based out of Victoria BC in Canada:

A non-profit organization that supports lesbians’ health and social needs as we age by ensuring safe, accessible, welcoming spaces for social interaction to build community through public education and social action.

VLSCS has been active in the Greater Victoria since 1996. Initially, the primary goal of the organization was to offer support to lesbians in the region as they aged, but as since evolved into an organization that advocates for lesbians from all walks of life, and offers opportunities for the local community to get together (such as offering lesbian dances and coffee houses!).

However, the VLSCS is at risk of being disbanded due to there not being enough people running for the board. The board needs to have at least five members, and only one person has decided to run for a board position. If four more people don’t express interest, VLSCS will be disbanded after 22 years of serving the lesbian community on southern Vancouver Island.

If the VLSCS is disbanded, the community here will lose so many resources, including:

  • Movie and Social Nights 2-3 times per month;
  • Coffee Talks where newcomers often introduce themselves to the community;
  • Christmas brunches;
  • Lesbian dances (which they had hoped to make this a regular feature starting this fall);
  • Craft fairs or solstice parties;
  • Potlucks;
  • Concerts like this year’s Our Voices;
  • Health Fund for members, often elderly or disabled, having difficulty to cover their out-of-pocket medical expenses;
  • Advocacy for lesbian seniors in care (they were just invited to the Southern Vancouver Island and Southern Gulf Islands Seniors Planning Table, which aims to motivate the government to advocate for what seniors really need, and there are concerns that the LBGTQ2 groups are not being represented);

This organization has done do much for my local community, and my heart is breaking due to its potential disbandment.

If you’re a lesbian living in the southern region of Vancouver Island, please consider volunteering with VLSCS, and potentially running for a board position

There memberships are currently 50% off, but financially disadvantaged lesbians can join for free by emailing hello@amazingwomen.ca with the subject heading “I AM AN AMAZING WOMAN” and explaining why you would like a membership. Any lesbian who lives in British Columbia can become a member.

There is a meeting on Friday, November 9th in downtown Victoria to discuss the current issues faced by the lack of leadership. For any local lesbians interested in attending, further information, times, and locations can be found on their website.

If you’re not local but would still like to help, please reblog this post to spread the word. Any boosting or support helps.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. If you support helping lesbians to live their lives happily and free from discrimination and poverty, please consider heling us keep this organization alive.

Here’s a list of some things we can do, and most pressingly, if you’re in MA vote YES on 3 and tell everyone you know.
“Bring Attention to YES ON 3 in Massachusetts. There’s a ballot initiative coming to a vote on November 6 in Massachusetts that would repeal protections for transgender and nonbinary people in public accommodations. This is the first statewide vote to strip trans people of their rights ever — and it would take away protections won in the legislature after decades of fighting to explicitly extend these protections to trans people.”

The Trump Administration is trying to define us trans folk out of existence- but we DO exist, we HAVE existed, and we sure as hell will CONTINUE to exist! Please, make sure you get out and vote, bring attention to trans voices, and support us wherever you can!

Our civil rights are at stake- by their own words, they believe inclusive policies “wrongfully extend civil rights protections to people who should not have them.” Please read this article on the proposed revision of the legal definition of gender!

Okay, hopefully that’s a good start ❤

the OP of the screenshotted tweet is on tumblr, and an author too, having put out Chameleon Moon and related stories.

I’m really relieved that both RoAnna and Heather’s books are linked on this post because if their tweets were going to be circulating around Tumblr with no way to indicate that Heather’s written a three-book (so far) fantasy series about magical lesbians and bi women in early 19th century Central Europe and RoAnna writes hopeful superhero dystopians that feature the only f/f/f triad MC’s I can think of in any book, that would have been hecking unfair.

@affablyevil, I hope that helps, but if you want more books, here’s a list I made a while ago of ten SFF f/f’s where they don’t die, and I am continually reading more and recommending more. (Have you heard of Flowers of Luna? College f/f set at fashion design college on the moon.)

[image description: a tweet from RoAnna Sylver (@RoAnna Syvler) reading “This June, please rememeber that there are more LGBT books than the ones you see everywhere put out by the Big 5, ad indies are amazing/worthy.” The next reblog is a tweet from Heather Rose Jones (@heatherrosejones) reading: “Making a list of queer SFF for Pride Month? Remember to look outside the mainstream presses. Don’t shut queer publishers out of queer lit.”]

Here’s a bunch of Goodreads lists that might help!

Speculative Fiction (SFF and Horror):

And some more lists, including a whole history of LGBT SFF!
